The Internet is a huge resource where you can find all kinds of great information and opportunities. With great size, however, comes a certain amount of difficulty in use.

The Gateway helps simplify common tasks on the Internet. Here are some of the things you can do with the Internet and the Gateway:

1. The World Wide Web Using the Web, you can get to just about any kind of information in the world. Everyone is putting up a Website nowadays. When you get on the Internet, the Web is what you will typically use to get around and do things. The way you get to a Website is easy - just click on a link in the Gateway, or type in the Website address (URL) in the Browser address field.

Tip: If I want to see what my cable company is doing lately on their website, I would type: "http://www.mycablecompany.com" in the address field of my Web browser. It's that simple to use the Web.

2. E-mail Using electronic mail (Email) to correspond with people is quickly becoming the preferred way to keep in touch and share information. You can write a letter and send it around the world in seconds! Because of the speed of Email, regular postal mail is called "snail mail" now. Once you get used to sending Email, you'll love it!

You can send Email with an Email Client (a small application that runs alone, or with your Web browser). When you open it, usually it will automatically check to see if you have any new mail and notify you if you do.

To send an email, click on the menu item "New Message", when the new message window opens, type the recipient's email address ("JoeSmith@domain.com") in the "To:" field; then give your note a subject name; type the message in the main message area and send it away. You can do a lot with Email. For more information on your specific Email application, look under its "Help" menu, or check its company Website.

3. FTP (File Transfers) You can also download (receive) and upload (send) files with the Internet. You'll need an FTP program to upload, but for most downloads, you can simply use your Web browser.

Tip: First, go to the Website where the file would be (if it's a Microsoft file, check "www.microsoft.com"). Browse the Website to find the page where you can download files (this varies with each Website). Click on the name of the file that you want to download, and your Web browser will ask you to Open it or Save it. Remember where you download the file to if you save it!

Tip: Each Website is a little different as to where they put things to download. Most have information on each page to help you find what you are looking for easily. If you still have trouble, send them an email and ask for information.
